REISSUE: "Over The Rainbow" by Abbe - Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

Abbe Lane recorded her disco LP "Rainbows" in 1980 - produced by Norman B. Ratner (of Butterfly Records) and spotlights the singer/actress of the 1950's. This project contained a big disco hit, "You Make It Hard To Love" as well as several of Abbe's take on a few familiar remakes.

"Over The Rainbow" is her disco arrangement on the Judy Garland classic from the film "The Wizard Of Oz". It is truly Las Vegas camp. I have taken the album version and blended the two with several images and scenes from the all-time classic film and this disco cut. It makes Dorothy seem a bit more hip and her three friends more like chaperones.

This Disco Video Mix is dedicated to all "Friends of Dorothy"!

Melba Moore - "Mind Up Tonight"1983

Beatrice Melba Smith (born October 29, 1945), known by her stage name, Melba Moore is an American disco, R&B singer and actress. She is the daughter of saxophonist Teddy Hill and R&B singer Bonnie Davis.

Music career

In 1975, Moore signed with Buddah Records and released the critically successful R&B album, Peach Melba, which included the minor hit, "I Am His Lady". The following year, in 1976, Moore scored her first significant hit with the Van McCoy-penned "This Is It", which reached the Billboard Hot 100, the top twenty position on the R&B chart and also reached the top ten in the UK, becoming her biggest success in that country. In 1976, she scored her third Grammy nomination with the R&B ballad, "Lean on Me", which had been recorded originally by Vivian Reed and later by Moore's idol Aretha Franklin who recorded the song as a b-side to her 1971 hit, "Spanish Harlem". The song is most notable for Moore's extended long note at the end of the track. In 1983, she re-recorded the song as a tribute to McCoy, who died four years earlier of illness. Throughout the rest of the 1970s, Moore struggled to match the success of This Is It with minor R&B/dance hits, gaining another hit with 1979's "You Stepped Into My Life", which was released on Epic Records and hit the top 20 on the R&B charts and also became one of her biggest pop hits.
It wouldn't be until 1982 when Moore started to gain huge success as a singer signing with Capitol Records and reaching the top 5 on the R&B charts with the dance pop/funk single, "Love's Comin' At Ya", which also hit the top 20 in the UK and became a sizable hit in some European countries for its post-disco sound. A string of R&B hits would follow during this decade including 1983's "Keepin' My Lover Satisfied" and "Love Me Right", 1984's "Livin' For Your Love", 1985's "Read My Lips", which later won Moore a fourth Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, making her just the third black artist after Donna Summer and Michael Jackson to be nominated in the rock category, and 1985's "When You Love Me Like This". In 1986, she scored two number-one R&B hits, including the duet, "A Little Bit More", with Freddie Jackson and "Falling". She scored other popular R&B hits including "Love the One I'm With (A Lot of Love)" and "It's Been So Long". In 1986, Moore also headlined the CBS television sitcom, Melba (TV show) that debuted the same night as the Challenger explosion and was abruptly canceled shortly thereafter. Her success began to wane as the decade closed, although she managed two further Top 10 R&B hits, "Do You Really (Want My Love)" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing" (which featured such artists as Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Jeffrey Osborne, Anita Baker and Stephanie Mills).

Indeep,"Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life"1982

Funky disco with a rap ending and sound effect.

"Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life" is a song written by Michael Cleveland for R&BNew Wavedance group Indeep. It features vocals from Reggie and Rose Marie Ramsey, and its protagonists recall how they were bored to death until a DJ played a hot song and saved their lives by giving new energy to the night. The song was released as a single in 1982 and became the most popular and successful hit released by its record label, Sound of New York/Becket Records. In the U.S. "Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life" reached number ten on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart and number two on the Club Singles chart, and it peaked at number thirteen in the United Kingdom. The track appears as the third track of the namesake album released in 1983.
Rolling Stone magazine declared the song "one of the greatest songs ever written about being a girl, listening to the radio, or any combination of the two," and, in 2005, editors of Blender magazine placed it at number 406 on its 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born list. The song also provided the inspiration of the title of the book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: The History of the Disc Jockey (2000). Because of the limited success of Indeep's later releases, the group's first single was its only major hit and placed it into the one-hit wonder category of artists. In 2004, UK house/trance music producer Seamus Haji made several popular remixes of the song through his own label, Big Love Records, and released them on a 12" single titled "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life (ATFC mixes)." This version reached number thirteen on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the UK Dance chart in 2006.
The song is sampled during Madonna's performance of her song "Music" on her Sticky & Sweet Tour. The song is featured in the 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on one of the in-game radio stations which are accessed while driving. It plays on the station called "Fever 105".

Brooklyn Express - You need a change of mind (1982)

Disco version of the 1972 Eddie Kendricks hit "Girl, You Need a Change of Mind"

B.T. Express (originally named Brooklyn Trucking Express) was an American funk/disco group, that had a number of successful songs during the 1970s.

Members of the group included vocalist Barbara Joyce Lomas, brothers Jamal (Louis) and Bill Risbrook, Billy Nichols (who wrote their number 1 hit "Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)"), Richard Thompson, lead guitar/vocals Wesley Pike Hall, Jr., Carlos Ward, Orlando Woods drums, and Dennis Rowe. Michael Jones, a keyboardist in the band from 1976–1979, later went solo and recorded under the name Kashif; he had several R&B hits in the 1980s. Billy Nichols also started a solo career, and had a hit with "Give Your Body Up to the Music," written by Andre Saunders (1979).

B.T. Express was signed in 1974 by internationally known pop artist and music industry veteran Sid Maurer, and former Epic Records promotion man Fred Frank, who were launching their new record label, Roadshow Records. The first record they released was their #2 Billboard Hot 100 song from 1974 "Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)". The follow-up single, an instrumental track titled "Express", reached #4 on the Hot 100, while both singles topped the Hot Dance Club Play chart. "Express", written by Jeff Lane stayed in the Hot 100 for 16 weeks, and also reached #34 in the UK Singles Chart. It was awarded a gold disc status by the R.I.A.A. on 4 August 1975.

Gwen Guthrie - It Should Have Been You (12" single) 1982

This Oklahoma born, New Jersey-raised lady of soul humbled her beginnings as a background vocalist. She sang background for artists like Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, among others. With songs like "Peanut Butter", "Padlock", and her biggest hit "Aint Nothin' Goin' on but the Rent", Gwen Guthrie established herself as an esteem singer-songwriter in the 80's. This is her first single on Island Recordings from the year 1982. This is considered one of the most underrated R&B dance tracks of the 80's. This song has also gained recent notoriety thanks to the GTA Series. You can hear this song in Vice City Stories, which gives this song a newer generation of cult followers to this beautiful music we call R&B.

McFadden & Whitehead-"Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now"1979

McFadden and Whitehead were an American songwriting, production, and recording duo, best known for their signature tune "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now". They wrote and produced some of the most popular R&B hits of the 1970s, and were primarily associated with Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia International soul music record label'.

La Flavour-Mandolay

LaFlavour began humbly in Massillon, Ohio in 1967. Twin brothers Pete and Steve Nervo (guitar and drums) joined with schoolmates Craig DeBock(guitar and sax) and Gino Milchak (bass guitar) to form the core of what would actually become several bands. Instead of following the path set by the British Invasion, the boys began playing soul tunes and early Motown, eventually getting gigs at local dances and sockhops. This early version of the band first called themselves "TheNoblemen", then "The Blues Soul".

By the mid-1970s,the boys had progressed into one of the hottest dance bands inthe area, and eventually began traveling as the show band"Ragweed". Eventually, they came to the attention of top entertainment booking agent John Sansone from Buffalo, NY,who took over the booking for the band and decided to re-name them "Flavour". The Boys became "LaFlavour"with the release of the album "Mandolay" in 1980, which was mostly written and produced by Mark Avsec (of Donnie Iris andWild Cherry fame). Two singles from the album made the Billboard charts, with Mandolay reaching #7. With a certified success undertheir belts, La Flavour was signed to MCA records, who thought it wise to separate their "show" image from their"recording" image.
MCA changed the band's name to"Fair Warning", and the boys and Mark Avsec recorded a second album, this time of catchy pop/rock tunes. "FairWarning" included a sure-fire hit single written by Avsec titled "She Don't Know Me". However, an upcoming band from Jersey called Bon Jovi were recording their first album at this time, and the song was selected for them. This move more orless ruined the chances of the song being pushed as a single for Fair Warning, and since the success of "Mandolay" hadcome on the heels of the disco/dance craze, Fair Warning was notas well received, and MCA eventually shelved the album and theproject.
